King Cake
Smallcakes Baton Rouge

Mardi Gras is one of the biggest parties in Louisiana every year, and what would be a party without a cake?

A King Cake that is!

Typically, King Cake connoisseurs begin eating the King Cake on January 6th (Also known as King's Day) up until Mardi Gras Day!

What is a king cake exactly? You have come to the right place... typically a cinnamon dough in the shape of a circle, sometimes has fillings in it, sometimes plain (That is one's personal preference). On top is icing decorated with sprinkles of Purple, Green, and Gold.

What do the colors represent?

Purple is for Justice

Gold is for Power

Green is for Faith

And of course it wouldn't be a true king cake without the baby! The plastic baby represents baby Jesus. And don't forget if you find the baby in the cake you have to bring the next one. Everyone has an opinion on their favorite king cake, so we asked some of our employees to tell us their favorites and why!

P.S. The knife stays in the box

Sarah
Sarah from Prairieville with Smallcakes Baton Rouge King Cake

This French Brioche King cake from Smallcakes in Baton Rouge has been all the rave this year! The king cake itself is beautiful. It is decorated with sugar crystals and sparkly glitter, it almost looks too pretty to cut! When you finally cut into this beauty you see the multi layers of the flaky dough brushed with a light cinnamon filling. This bread will make your jaw drop… it’s just that good. Now don’t let me forget the other star of the show, the icing! It definitely would win for best supporting actor. Its velvety texture is wonderful and the taste is “my oh my”. Some say that a king cake must have a filling to have flavor, but I’m here to tell you this icing checks all of the flavor boxes. Even if you aren’t a king cake lover, this dessert will have you reaching for a second piece. This cake is delicious from top to bottom! Pro-tip: stick it in the microwave for 6 seconds, you won’t be sorry.
