Don’t Rely on Luck to Manage Your Money

How to handle your finances strategically, instead

While we’ve all got four-leaf clovers and good luck on the brain, it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t leave the fate of our finances up to the leprechauns. Our team at United Community Bank, with deep roots along the bayou and river parish region, is dedicated to ensuring that even the most green money managers among us can master their budgets like pros.

We’ve put together a simple checklist to help get your finances in order. While we can’t promise gold coins at the end of a rainbow, we’re pretty confident that we can help you save for a rainy day, pay down your student loans or even put money aside for a down payment on a home.

Your strategic finances check-list (No luck required)

Automate transfers to your savings
Set up automatic transfers from checking to savings on payday. Even small amounts like $25 build over time. And the best part? You won’t even realize you’re doing it!

Assign every dollar a job
Create a monthly budget spreadsheet and denote where all of your money is allocated. Create categories like housing, groceries, debt, savings and fun. When you decide where money goes in advance, you’ll be less surprised when unexpected expenses pop up later.

Grow your rainy-day fund
Set a goal to save 3–6 months of essential expenses in an emergency fund. This might sound impossible at first glance, but if you automate savings at every paycheck, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can build this rainy-day fund, especially if you’re using the Reward Checking Account from UCB.

Track your spending patterns
We know, we know. This sounds tedious, and it is … but only at first. Review your account activity once a week. You will likely find autopayments that you didn’t realize you had, like old subscriptions. Cancel them and save some green!

Pay more than the minimum on debt
This one is important and stumps a lot of people. Paying only the minimum payment on a debt won’t get you very far. Whenever possible, add a little extra to credit cards, student loans or other high-interest balances. Even an extra $10 or $20 can help you pay down your debt faster than you think.

Open separate accounts
Create dedicated savings buckets for things like:

  • Emergency savings
  • Travel or holidays
  • Home down payment
  • Annual expenses (insurance, taxes, etc.)

Schedule a monthly “money check-in”
These check-ins don’t have to feel big and scary. Pick a date, put it on the calendar and stick to it. Think of it like routine car maintenance, but for your bank account! You can review things like:

  • Spending
  • Savings progress
  • Upcoming expenses

Plan for the future with baby steps
Whether it’s retirement contributions, saving for a home or building a college fund, consistency beats timing or luck every time. We can help you build better financial habits so your goals feel attainable.

BR American Heart Association Luncheon
The UCB team sponsored a table and attended the luncheon at L'auberge to support women's heart health in the capital region.
