As the UCB taste-testers know well, a king cake is typically a cinnamon dough in the shape of a circle that sometimes has fillings in it. Often, the cake is plain, but that just depends on personal preference. On top is icing decorated with sprinkles of purple, green and gold.

This French brioche king cake has been all the rage this year! The cake itself is beautiful. It is decorated with sugar crystals and sparkly glitter, it almost looks too pretty to cut! When you finally cut into this beauty, you see the multi-layers of the flaky dough brushed with a light cinnamon filling. This bread will make your jaw drop … It’s just that good. Now, don’t let me forget the other star of the show, the icing! It definitely would win for best supporting actor. Its velvety texture is wonderful and the taste is “my oh my.” Some say that a king cake must have a filling to have flavor, but I’m here to tell you this icing checks all of the flavor boxes. Even if you aren’t a king cake lover, this dessert will have you reaching for a second piece. This cake is delicious from top to bottom! Pro-tip: stick it in the microwave for six seconds, you won’t be sorry.

Our team at the Pelican Point Branch tried the strawberry cream cheese, a fan favorite from Ralphs. It's the perfect balance of bread and filling! Down the Bayou, our UCB LaRose branch was able to taste the famous Cajun Pecan House king cake. Our manager, Maci, said, "The Pecan House was known for being the best in the South, and they have so many options, it's hard to choose a flavor."
